Activities of Theme 1: Second language teaching methods

1. It has been said that the Grammar- Translation Method teaches students about the target language, but not how to use it. Explain the difference in your own words.

The Grammar-Translation Method is a good method only for learning English´s grammar. Although is not good to encourage the communication. A perfect method has to encourage the communication too and the best way to learn it is making errors. The really important thing is to develop communicative competence.


2. In the Grammar-Translation Method, grammar is treated deductively; in the Direct Method, grammar is treated inductively. Can you explain the difference between deductive and inductive treatments of grammar?


Both approaches can offer certain advantages but the biggest difference is the role of the teacher. In a deductive grammar clasroom the teacher conducts lessons by introducing and explaining concept´s to students. Conversely, inductive method is a much more student-centred approach and makes use of a strategy known as noticing.

3.Which of the following techniques follows from the principles of the Audio-Lingual Method, and which ones don´t? Explain the reasons for your answer.

5. Asher believes that foreign language instruction can and should be modelled on native language acquisition. What are some characteristics of TPR that are similar to the way children acquire their native language?


TPR (total physical response) is a useful method for children when they are learning a first language. Because children imitation the direct behaviour that teacher director. Children listen and speak in a enjoyable way. And for this reason children learn properly L1.
